Translation Analysis and Error Correction Cost Calculator

The Asia Online Translation Cost Calculator was developed to fill the gap between translation error analysis and correction. There are many formulas used to calculate the number of errors in machine and human translated output.

Asia Online has developed a user configurable calculator to show the cost of correcting such errors and to show the savings that can be made by using a combination of machine translation and human post editing.

The calculator uses the industry standard Translate, Edit and Proofread (TEP) processes that most language service providers are familiar with. While not perfect, this accepted means of costing is a good starting point to understainding and measuring costs.

Definitions and Guidelines
To calculate costs and savings, fill in the form using the guidelines specified in the 4 steps below. The results will update with each change that you make.
Step Description
Job Parameters - Job Size:
Two different job size parameters are required, the total job size and the sample job size. Count the total number of words for the entire job.
Select a random subset (sample) of the machine translated output that you wish to analyze. These should be as random as possible and it is also useful to set a minimum word limit (e.g. segment must be 5 words or more.) A good sized subset (sample) is usually 500 or 1000 segments.
Language Studio Lite can help with sample extraction and counting the number of words for both parameters.
Job Parameters - Resource Costs:
The costs and performance of each resource in either a traditional human translation and post editing role or a machine translation and post editing role will clearly show the gains to be made by using translation. Post editing machine translation is a different skill to traditional human translation post editing and both productivity and cost differs.
Segment Correction Analysis - Error Count Analysis:
Analyze each segment in the sample using the below definitions and rate the segment. If there are more than one type of error in a single segment, use the most severe based on Effort to Correct. Once you have determined the errors in each segment from the sample, count the total number of each type of error and enter each total value into the appropriate position on the table.
Segment Correction Analysis - Effort and Skill Assignment:
Effort to Correct should be estimated as percentage of the amount of work requred to correct an error made by machine translation when compared to translating the segment using a human translator only.
Skill Level Required to Correct should be set to either Translator or Post Editor so as to use the appropriate costs for correction.

Segment Classification Definition
No Sense The text is not understandable to any degree. It must be completely retranslated.
Mistranslations The text is understandable, but translated poorly. It needs to be completely retranslated.
Grammar/Syntax The grammar is incorrect or the relation of words is their reference to other words, or their dependence according to the sense is in correct and needs to be adjusted.
Literal Translation The translation is a literal translation.
Terminology The terminology is incorrect. The word is translated to a different meaning for the same word.
Unknown Words One or more words were unknown to the translation engine.
Addition The text has additional words that need to be deleted.
Omission The text is missing words that need to be inserted.
Spelling The text has spelling errors.
Punctuation The punctuation is incorrect.
Capitalization The capitalization of some words is incorrect.
Correct Translation Sentence is correct and does not need any editing. Ready to publish as it is.
