Did you know that more than 10% dirty data has a measurable negative impact on SMT
systems?
Asia Online maintains that clean data matters, and that the most reliable and robust
SMT systems are those built from data that is known and verified to be clean. Our
experience and several tests we have conducted clearly validate this.
At an October 2008 presentation that Microsoft gave at the AMTA conference they
also mentioned that they had conducted tests with their SMT based systems to see
what impact, known dirty data can have on the system. They found that once the dirty
data constituted more than 10% of a training corpus, there is a clear degradation
in the quality of the system.
Our own tests, documented in a study done for TAUS, indicate that a small clean
dataset can significantly outperform a dirty dataset that has twice as much data!

Asia Online partners with Language Service Providers (LSPs) to give them all the
tools they need to service their customers with on large-scale, bulk translation
projects that require automated translation.
In addition to providing access to Asia Online’s statistical machine translation
platform, with support for hundreds
of language pairs ,
Asia Online also provides tools and services to enable LSPs to customize the platform
to meet their specific customer linguistic requirements.
LSPs can create specific, high-quality translation system configurations for customers
with unique translation requirements, such as those in the automotive, legal, technological
or medical fields.
Asia Online has built a technology platform with series of tools, that allow for
rapid development of customized translation engines focused on specific subject
domains.
LSPs also benefit from Asia Online’s unique ability to learn from post editing corrections
and never make the same mistake twice. Working with Asia Online’s powerful editing
tools, LSP’s subject matter experts and editors, proofread early translations and
make corrections where needed. The Asia Online platform then takes these corrections
and learns from them as the engines are periodically updated and retrained. The
result is that subsequent translations are greatly improved. This approach allows
the system to learn idioms, cultural nuances, technical terms and industry jargon
quickly and provides high quality automation support for future translations.
Developing and managing this kind of technology can be costly and time consuming.
Asia Online provides access to the technology for LSPs via Language Studio™ Enterprise. No servers, technical management expertise
or software licenses are needed. Instead efforts can be invested in post editing
and building automation and rapid response leverage for future translation projects.
This not only reduces capital outlay and on-going costs, but also speeds up deployment
and substantially reduces the risk associated with investing in machine translation
solutions.
Put simply, LSPs can get now take on the sort of large-scale translation projects
that were previously impossible to accomplish with human-only translators.

Global Enterprises in any location and in any industry can take advantage of Asia
Online’s statistical machine translation platform, in order to more rapidly translate
large volumes of high value content at a significantly lower costs than alternative
approaches. Globalization trends and the increasing use of the web to reach the
global customer is driving global companies to make much more information available
to support their international business initiatives.
The success of global companies who have started to make much more product related
information available is beginning to be understood. The impact of making large
amounts of information available, especially in knowledge intensive industries,
can dramatically enhance and improve customer satisfaction in international markets.
Companies like Microsoft have illustrated this clearly, by making automated translations
of their knowledge bases available.
Historically, enterprises have not been able to do this easily because of the sheer
volume of the information and the time and costs of using traditional localization
approaches to do this. But now they can use Asia Online’s platform to translate
large volumes of information across hundreds of languages pairs .
Asia Online’s technology platform is designed to support evolutionary improvement
in the translation of massive amounts of information to support global customers.
Initial translation engines can be put into production and they can improve and
learn in real-time as human editors provide corrective feedback, which is recycled
as training material. This allows enterprises to continually tune the engines to
provide accurate translations of trademarked product names, marketing phrases or
specialized industry terms. For example, the unique product name PowerTool is not
the same as the text “power tool.” By simply proofreading an early translation and
correcting product names and special terms, enterprises can constantly train the
Asia Online platform for their specific and continually changing needs.
Asia Online can also work with enterprises outsourced language service providers,
enabling for the first time shared platform for enterprises to collaborate with
their translation partners in real-time.

Increasingly, Government Enterprises are also required to interact with increasingly
diverse constituencies. In major cities around the world, we are seeing more linguistic
diversity in the population. In some regions of the US, Spanish is already the dominant
language. Cities like Los Angeles and New York City have large populations from
Asia in addition to a growing Hispanic population.
The need in Medicine and Emergency Response is the greatest, but as more government-citizen
interaction moves to the web we can expect many other areas including Immigration,
Tax, Education and Law Enforcement to expand their multilingual presence on the
web. This is also true for several government entities in Europe as well.
They too can take advantage of Asia Online’s statistical machine translation platform
in order to more rapidly produce translated materials at a significantly lower cost
than previous processes. These entities can develop different translation engines
for the key domains of interest, and thus be able to keep citizens informed and
engaged. Government Agencies can use Asia Online’s platform to translate large volumes
of information across hundreds of languages pairs .
The Asia Online platform has the ability to deliver significantly better quality
than “free” MT systems on the web. They are also designed to accept corrective feedback
from the target users and learn in real-time . This could be managed and monitored
for accuracy and linguistic quality by internal experts or LSP partners. The crowdsourcing
capabilities of the Asia Online platform, provide yet another way, to rapidly raise
the quality of the translated content. By simply proofreading and correcting early
translations experts and end-users can all contribute to the continuing improvements
in quality.
Asia Online can also provide the ability to install these translation systems on
premise on customer servers whenever required. This is sometimes an important requirement
for some government agencies.

Former Sun Microsystems’ Chief Researcher and Vice President of the Science Office,
John Gage coined the term “The network is the computer.” This phrase is the primary
force behind many applications today that without the network would not be useful
or may not have ever been created. It is the power in internetworking applications
and their capabilities that has created significant advances in functionality, productivity,
interoperability and standards.
Asia Online recognizes that translation alone is not enough. The key to truly enable
applications is the network. Asia Online provides an advanced application programmer
interface (API) that uses industry standard web services to communicate across the
Internet or network. Developers of network games and applications that have communications
between multiple parties such as SMS, television set top boxes, email and other
network applications can connect directly to the API for translation in near real
time.
But don’t stop at translation, by adding OCR, text-to-voice, voice-to-text and many
other technologies that are available today, amazing integrated offerings can be
achieved. Examples include camera phones that can take a photo of a menu, OCR the
image and send the translated menu back to the phone. Or photo copiers that OCR
a page, translate it and print it again – delivering paper-to-paper translation.
The possibilities for network applications that integrate Asia Online’s platform
are only limited by your imagination.

Historically, publishers of high value subscription content have had to limit their
subscription revenue to the markets that can consume the content in its originating
language. Some have endeavored to translate the most popular content to a few key
languages. This greatly limits their overall revenue opportunities and potentially
substantial amounts of revenue are lost this way. Asia Online can help you to liberate
digital content and get to this hidden revenue.
Publishers of Financial, Legal, IT Research, Scientific and Technical information
all have the potential to sell their content, to a much wider global market if they
provided multilingual versions of the content. This is especially true for several
European languages as well as Chinese, Japanese and Korean. It is possible to make
the information available in several different ways. The lowest quality automated
translations would allow information to be searched and indexed in a foreign language
and then this could help global customers find specific information of interest
that could be sent to human translators. For publishers who invest in developing
higher quality translation systems, it is possible to support subscribers who directly
consume new content that is processed through the Asia Online continuous improvement
translation platform.
Publishers can take advantage of Asia Online’s statistical machine translation platform
in order to more rapidly produce translated materials at a significantly lower cost
than previous processes. They can tailor the quality and human feedback efforts
to the specific global market opportunities. The Asia Online platform can support
anything from simple glossary based customization to complete almost publication
quality SMT engine creation. With several cycles of expert human corrective feedback
it is possible to ensure publication quality raw output.
Asia Online can also work with enterprises outsourced language service providers,
enabling for the first time shared platform for enterprises to collaborate with
expert, professional translation partners in real-time.

We live in a world that is increasingly global. Over a billion people across the
world are online and it is possible that as many as 2 billion people will be connected
in the next few years.
Global enterprises are often dispersed with design in Europe, management in the
US and manufacturing in China. Enterprises need to be able to communicate, both
within the enterprise and with customers and partners in different global markets.
Much of this communication is around specific products information or human resource
issues. Information and knowledge sharing is hampered by language barriers and this
can slow down collaboration and progress. While many try to enforce English as the
global corporate language, many still prefer, and can better comprehend important
information in their local language.
Asia Online’s statistical machine translation platform can be customized around
key enterprise domains to produce compelling translation quality of important day
to day material. The systems can be tuned to produce excellent quality on email
content and regular product communications within different divisions in an enterprise.
The Asia Online’s platforms ability to learn in real-time can be used to continually
improve the quality of the translations. Each recipient of an automatically translated
communication can make small corrections, that are recycled to continually improve
the ongoing translations.
Asia Online can also work with outsourced language service providers, enabling for
the first time, a shared platform for enterprises to collaborate with their translation
partners in real-time.

The mobile phone is increasingly being viewed as a device where translation can
provide very high value. As phones become more capable of running applications that
previously were relegated to PCs, it will be possible to have many new mobile translation
applications.
For example photos of documents, signs, menus can be sent back to a server for OCR
and translation. SMS and Text messages could be translated or could enable a cross
lingual chat. Applications that translate and speak out phrases could also be coming
soon.
Again the robust and flexible Asia Online Translation Technology Platform can be
quickly tuned to produce compelling quality for these kinds of applications. As
the data resources for various kinds of communication styles are gathered and analyzed,
it will be possible to train our systems to do well even in these kinds of applications.
The combination of crowdsourcing feedback and the Asia Online learning platform
will enable much more rapid progress even on this front.
