This month's newsletter looks at some of the recent advances in machine translation. Proof points are provided from Asia Online's client Omnilingua Worldwide, and they demonstrate the importance of metrics and provide a comparison of Asia Online's Language Studio™ technology against the technology of the incumbent service provider whom Asia Online recently replaced. One of the more interesting results of this analysis highlights the difference between actual measured levels of productivity when using MT and the levels of productivity perceived by the human translators. The custom MT engine built by Asia Onlne's Language Studio™ for Omnilingua delivered 52% of new original output with no errors at all and thus required zero edits, and the overall quality of the machine plus human approach delivered a more consistent output and higher quality than a human only approach.

This month’s newsletter is packed with information that further demonstrates the
value of machine translation, and it includes with real-world proof points from users of Asia Online's
Language Studio™ technology. The Asia Online team has been very busy attending
a number of events and engaging with many LSPs, enterprises and eDiscovery organizations.
The highlight of February was the JABA-Translations Machine Translation Workshop
held in beautiful Porto where
a group of LSPs gathered for two days to learn from the real-world experience of
Joaquim Alves who shared in a very open exchange of information and ideas. Attendees
reviewed JABA-Translations' customized English into Portuguese Technical Automotive
engine that is delivering improved efficiency with machine translation quality matching
productivity levels equivalent to 85% fuzzy match on translation memories.
We also preview more features of the upcoming Language Studio™ V3.0 release.
This new release focuses on three key areas: data security and privacy, quality
and control. While these issues are important to LSPs, the new features have also been
designed from the ground up to address the growing needs for data security and sensitive
data processing required by government institutions, security services and financial
institutions.
Machine translation has long been seen as a technology that has overpromised and
failed to deliver. At Asia Online, we focus on setting realistic expectations with
our customers and work to educate the market with case studies and factual examples.
It is unfortunate that this view is not shared by all providers of machine translation,
many of whom continue to disseminate unrealistic promises well beyond what is practical.

Happy New Year!! This month’s newsletter
is packed with information. The Asia Online team wrapped up 2011 on a high note
with a number of key partnership and technology relationships. This month we add
four new technology partners who are integrating the Language Studio™
API into their platforms so that translation with Asia Online is a seamless process.
We also secured a relationship with one of Russia’s leading LSPs, Janus Worldwide,
for the collaborative development of automated translation systems between English
and Russian.
We are also very pleased to announce the launch of our new Language Studio™
Multilingual eDiscovery Services. These services enable providers of eDiscovery
analysis, forensics and litigation support services to add complex translation and
document processing functionality to their client offerings.
The Asia Online development team has also been hard at work on Version 3 of Language
Studio™ Enterprise. A vast number of great new features are being
added that increase quality, throughput and improve the amount of control that users
have over their custom engines. One of the important enhancements in Language Studio™
V3.0 is the improvements in our on-premise offerings that bulk translators (billions
of words per day) such as government, defense and security agencies
will find very interesting.
Asia Online recently built its first Language Studio™ custom engine for
Hunnect. Hungarian
is known to be a very complex language and difficult for machine translation. But as
their case study shows, even on their very first project, Hunnect was able to increase
margins by 20% and reduce delivery time by 46%, without compromising on
quality.

The main article in this month’s newsletter focuses on how to measure the quality
of machine translation when comparing machine various translation vendors, and it
also explores the importance of the measuring quality improvements in translation
engines.
Unlike Language Studio™, the quality of most translation engines improves
very little after the first version is released. Conversely, Language Studio™
is designed for rapid improvement, with one customer recently receiving a 30 BLEU
point increase from a single Incremental Improvement Training.
You don’t need to be a large LSP to benefit from Language Studio™ efficiencies

This month’s newsletter focuses on the rapid maturing of machine translation in the market place and the types of solution now on offer. We also discuss how Language Service Providers (LSPs) and enterprises can achieve rapid Return On Investment (ROI) from the unique Language Studio™ clean data strategy, and we summary a case study from Sajan where raw output quality in Simplified Chinese and Spanish is beating first pass human translators.
Many new MT service providers are repackaging open source technology and trying to mimic Asia Online’s Clean Data SMT message. There is nothing wrong per se with open source. Indeed, the open source Moses decoder was mainly developed by Asia Online’s Philipp Koehn and Hieu Hoang at the University of Edinburgh and extended during a Johns Hopkins University Summer Workshop and further developed under EuroMatrix and GALE project funding by many other academics and researchers. Moses is an excellent open source tool. However, using existing open source software alone will not yield the best results. Much higher quality and better ROI can be achieved with the use of proprietary Language Studio™ technology and processes.

How four translation specialists worked together to create the next generation of
LSP
Berlin, Boston, Singapore, Toronto - August 2, 2010 - Milengo, a worldwide language
service provider (LSP), has engaged a trio of specialized translation services and
technology providers to create an end-to-end translation solution that delivers
on the promise of the next generation of translation advances. The new offering
combines quality-optimization, workflow management and automated machine-translation
with human translation and editing skills to not only increase efficiency, but to
also open new markets that were previously not possible with a human only approach.
With the growth in globalization, many new opportunities have become available to
enterprises. However barriers remained in terms of cost and efficiencies that prohibited

How the Solution Evolved
Milengo had been increasingly involved in bulk translation projects stemming from
Internet-based services, such as technical support help-desks and knowledge management
systems. These types of projects frequently involved public documents and comments
and there was as pressing need to make this information available in multiple languages.
In order to cope with the ever increasing volume of documents from these projects,
Milengo embarked on a Machine Translation pilot project to translate content generated
by the public and send it to support staff. Using Asia Online’s automated machine
translation platform, public questions were translated from a subset of languages
into English, and the support articles and FAQs were translated from English into
six languages.
Asia Online worked with Milengo to develop a customized engine that was optimized
to handle the complexities of both technical information, and also the less formal
structure of public questions.
During this pilot, Milengo and Asia Online identified that the quality of source
documents had a big impact on the resulting translation quality. An experiment was
conducted where source documents were processed by Acrolinx. The resulting improvements
in raw machine translation were so positive, that this source document quality control
was adopted for all projects, not just those involving public sources of information.
In order to automate and manage the entire translation process, Clay Tablet provided
a connector that allowed the client’s website content to be automatically passed
to Acrolinx, then to Asia Online for automated translation, and then into post-editing
by Milengo’s global pool of translators. Most importantly, post-editing information
is captured and returned back into the machine translation platform to improve quality.

New study into Automated Language Translation highlights need for clean and normalized
data when sharing data. In cooperation with the Translation Automation User Society
(TAUS), Asia Online conducted an experiment to determine the optimum approaches
for building statistical machine translation (SMT) engines with shared data. The
findings indicate that significant improvements in translation machine quality can
be achieved with smaller pools of shared, clean data.
Ottawa, Canada (PRWEB) August 26, 2009 -- Conducted
in early 2009, Asia Online, in cooperation with TAUS, conducted an extensive experiment
to determine the optimum way to build a statistical machine translation (SMT) engines
with pooled data resources. Development of SMT engines have been hindered by the
lack of sufficient amounts of training data and this experiment provides guidance
on best practices for using and sharing pooled data resources. The final analysis
and report is now available
for download.

For the purposes of the experiment, three TAUS member companies in the same industry
domain provided sets of training data to develop SMT engines. Each company was a
multinational software organization. Asia Online performed extensive analysis on
the data and created a total of 29 separate SMT engines by combining the data from
the three companies in various configurations. It then performed evaluations of
the output quality of all 29 engines using the BLEU and the F-Measure metrics.
According to Kirti Vashee, Asia Online's VP of Enterprise Translation Sales, the
study is of particular importance to organizations looking at ways to constrain
the costs associated with large localization projects, and considering data sharing
as a means to accomplish this. "While SMT holds great promise in reducing the overall
cost and increasing the throughput of globalization initiatives, the cost/complexity
of creating a SMT engine has been a barrier, mainly because of the large volumes
of training data that are needed. General wisdom holds that, the more data available
when training the engine, the higher the translation quality of the SMT engine.
However, just how much data is needed and of what type had not been rigorously tested
or understood. This study dispels some myths about what is really needed to build
a quality SMT engine and provides some evidence for what does work."

"The study shows that clean and normalized training data is key to high-quality
translation output when building SMT engines. Therefore, activities associated with
normalization and data cleaning should be integrated into best practices. Other
related research, suggests that as little as 10% of the data in an unclean format
can have a negative impact on translation quality. " said Mr. Vashee.

Key Finding 1: The best results are achieved by combining clean, mostly normalized
sets of data. In general, un-normalized raw translation memory (TM) data produces
lower-quality engines than engines built with clean normalized data. Significantly,
more un-normalized data is required to get similar quality translation output as
engines built with much smaller amounts of clean normalized data.
Put simply, this means that for most organizations, effort should be placed on preparing
(and / or sharing) pools of consistent, clean normalized data rather than just attempting
to locate large amounts of raw data.
Key Finding 2: The use of consolidated raw normalized data only improves
engine quality when terminology is highly consistent across the shared data sets.
Thus, focus on terminological consistency is likely to yield significant benefits.
This also means that there is much less measurable benefit to using consolidated
data with un-normalized raw data. In fact, adding non-normalized raw data to a smaller
pool of normalized clear data can negatively impact the final engine quality.
For organizations looking to share or pool data, this suggests that each contributing
set of data needs to be analyzed, cleaned and normalized before meaningful benefits
occur.
Key Finding 3: The addition of clean baseline datasets can improve the fluency
of the final translations and fill gaps in vocabulary that were not in the training

base as this architecture allows their systems to improve with each use and ongoing

which will encourage and enable massive translation projects that would never otherwise
be undertaken.”

Asia Online set to take Thai language test

Ending months of speculation and secretive development, former Gartner vice president
Dion Wiggins has formally unveiled Asia Online, his latest venture into statistical
machine translation (SMT) aimed at bringing the world's content to non-English language
speakers in Asia. And he said he is willing to prove the quality of his system by
offering it free for a major textbook translation project recently announced by
the ICT Ministry.
Speaking at the ICT Forum, Wiggins praised initiatives such as Negroponte's "one
hundred dollar" laptop, Windows XP Starter Edition and Microsoft's Flexgo micropayment
programme for increasing awareness of ICT but warned that this hardware-led view
has seen a shortage of content.
"People talk about the digital divide. They forget the content issue. If you don't
have content then why would you go online?" he asked.
Wiggins claimed that even popular sites such as sanook.com have failed to make the
move into large sale content as it is not a cheap thing to do.
There are less than 10 million web pages in Thailand, a country of 65 million people.
However, Indonesia has less than 500,000 web pages and has 15 times the population
of Thailand, which suggests that most Indonesians use English on the web.
Wiggins said that the next billion Internet users will mostly come from non-English
speakers in emerging markets. The key to tapping into this market is, he believes,
machine translation.
There are two ways to do machine translation. Rule-based translation uses linguists
to come up with rules, but the problem is then that every other sentence is an exception
that breaks the rules.
Statistical Machine Translation is a method that takes two parallel texts, compares
them, and builds up a probability ratio of how likely each word or phrase is to
be translated into another word or phrase. Thus it can learn any pair of languages
if fed enough "parallel copra" or pairs of texts, such as a copy of Harry Potter
in English and another one in Thai.
Wiggins said that a professional translator can charge more than US$100,000 a year
and can translate only 1,500 words a day. However, one PC running Asia Online's
SMT software can translate seven million words a day today and he expects to take
that up to 20 million words a day with further development.
When told that the ICT Ministry had just commenced a 100 million baht book translation
project to expand the knowledge available in Thai, Wiggins immediately offered his
system for the initial translation free of charge, and added that while a typical
book translation can take up to three months, his SMT system can do it in 15 minutes.
By the end of the [next] year, Asia Online expects to have 440 Asian language pairs
available. This also allows for direct translation from, say, Thai to Japanese without
having to go through English first and will even translate between little used languages
like Khmer.
Wiggins noted that Thai did pose a number of unique challenges, as it is one of
the few languages without punctuation and word breaks. Asia Online had to develop
software to correctly break up words and sentences. Asia Online also had to develop
its own optical character recognition algorithm as none of the commercially available
systems were good enough to accurately scan the huge amounts of text needed to learn
the language.
"Automatic translation will dramatically improve citizen's knowledge, education
and the overall economy. Thailand's R&D as a percentage of GDP is one of the
lowest and the number of engineers and scientists per million citizens is also one
of the lowest. Access to knowledge is the way to change that," he said.
Another promising avenue that Asia Online is considering is voice to voice translation.
It has developed a system that converts voice to text, translates that text to another
language with the standard SMT software, and then reconverts that translated text
to voice.

A Thailand-based web company wants to create the ultimate translation tool

A web company based in Thailand is hoping to create a tool that allows for the translation
of Asian language texts, including Thai, into any other major language and vice
versa. In doing so, it hopes to make the vast amount of information on the Internet
available to those who cannot read English.
One year ago, Asia Online invited Professor Philipp Koehn from the University of
Edinburgh's School of Informatics to help perfect Statistical Machine Translation
(SMT) for Thai and many other Asian languages. In an exclusive interview, Koehn
explained how SMT first arose as an IBM project in the late 1980s, translating between
French and English.
Instead of the usual rules and grammatical structure, SMT uses statistics through
paring up sentences in each language, called parallel copra, and learning how sentences
are translated. Essentially, the system can learn Thai by feeding it, for example,
copies of Harry Potter in English and the translated Thai versions for it to analyse.
The system works much better than conventional rule-based systems as few languages
have words that map directly to another. "Take the phrase 'interest rate.' Interest
has a lot of different meanings, rate is also an amorphous word that has many meanings,
but interest rate together has a very definite translation. Local context helps
a lot," Koehn explained. Another example is refuse (the verb, meaning turn down)
and refuse (the noun, meaning trash). These give surprisingly few problems.
The challenges lie with different sentence structures. Japanese and German, for
instance, have the verb at the end of the sentence. German also has morphology,
where words merge into huge monster words. A bigger problem is with languages that
leave out information altogether, for instance on tense or omitted subjects or objects
which have to then be gathered from the surrounding sentences.

Away from his work at Asia Online and the university, Koehn is also working on real-time
voice translation for DARPA, the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency for
Chinese and Arabic. The system is already deployed in Iraq and has by far the most
mature SMT engine available, with over 200 million parallel copra sentence pairs.
The system starts to work well with 20 million sentence pairs and gives a good result
with 40 million, according to Koehn.
Another project is in the European Union. Its 25 official languages means over 600
language pairs that every document needs to be translated to and from. One benefit
is the high quality of existing legal documents which can be used to train the SMT
engine.
For Thai, one of the unique challenges has been to create a work segmentation pre-processor,
as Thai does not have breaks between words or full stops. Today, Asia Online has
hired fresh graduates from Chulalongkorn University's computational linguistics
programme and is working with researchers from Chulalongkorn, Thammasat, Kasetsart
and NECTEC (the National Electronics and Computer Technology Centre).
It also has developed a post-processor that rates the quality of Thai and the automatic
changes are fed back into the SMT learning engine.
The algorithms are relatively advanced. Learning Arabic with 200 million parallel
copra takes around a week on a modern Linux PC with 4GB of memory and a lot of hard
disk space.
Asia Online founder Dion Wiggins explained that while Professor Koehn has been focusing
on the usability and the translation quality as part of his pure research work,
it will be up to Asia Online to architect the algorithms in a way that can scale
to thousands of transactions a second. This will allow users of the Asia Online
portal to view the Internet in any language they wish.
A lot of work can be taken care of in the pre- and post-processing. For instance,
Chinese numbering refers to 52,000 as "five point two ten thousand", which would
need to be translated into "fifty-two thousand" for both English and Thai. Other
engineers are working on a name and place recognition pre-processor that will tag
words that need to be translated phonetically.
Professor Kohen and the Asia Online staff declined to show the quality of Thai translation
just yet, though they promised it would be better than anything else available when
it is formally launched.
Time will tell.
One key improvement of the raw algorithms will be the development of specialised
domains. For instance, language used in car manuals is quite different from legal
documents and from chatrooms. Wiggins said that the system will feature thousands
of domains, which will be one of the unique points of the Asiao Online SMT engine.
For languages with insufficient texts, like Khmer, SMT algorithms can triangulate
with two or more different languages, for instance merging Japanese-Khmer with English-Khmer
parallel copra. This has successfully been used to train SMT systems for Gaelic,
Welsh and Catalan and other "low resource" languages.
The Bible and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights have been very useful as
it has been translated into every major language. For Asia, Wiggins is eyeing the
Buddhist Tripitaka for use to train the engine.
Asked if this would mean that Asia Online will be able to translate into ancient
languages such as Pali, still used widely in Buddhist rituals, and Sanskrit, Wiggins
laughed and said, "Let's get Thai working first."
