High-quality automated machine translation is an attainable goal. Professional machine
translation and professional human translation are very similar. In order to deliver
high quality translations to your clients, specialist translators are required that
have a deep understanding of the client's target domain, writing style and audience.
With Language Studio™ you can create GREAT Custom Translations that
meet your client needs and expand business opportunities and revenues beyond those
that can be achieved with human only translation projects.
Success Requires Control
Unlike other translation technologies that offer only “gist” quality translations,
Language Studio™ is designed for producing translations for publishers – this
not only means that the quality expectations are higher, but that there is an essential
level of control that can be maintained over the entire translation process.
Because Asia Online is also a multilingual content publisher, Language Studio™
has been designed for publishing translated content from the outset.
Our technologies are not tacked-on Band-Aid approaches that attempt to fix out-dated
legacy translation techniques. Language Studio™ takes a hybrid approach that
uses rules to guide statistical translation technologies to deliver the highest
quality translation output.
Language Studio™ is designed with a focus on continued improvement. This can
be achieved only by having a transparent and open process where LSPs can control
the technology, the vocabulary and the style of translation. Such a level of control
has not been possible in the past with other legacy technologies.
4 Historical Complaints About Machine Translation
|
Lack of Control
|
Writing style was not controllable. A flat translation was produced that could not
be managed or modified to deliver to a particular audience (e.g. business reader
or children.) In many cases, this lack of control resulted in the work effort to
correct a machine translation being greater than the effort to translate with a
human only.
|
|
Repetitive Corrections
|
The machine made the same mistakes over and over and did not provide a means to
fix it. This resulted in repetitive human efforts that were boring, tedious and
time consuming.
|

Stone age mind set towards machine translation.
Times have changed.
|
Wrong Terminology
and Vocabulary
|
The machine selected the wrong terms or had a poor choice of vocabulary that sounded
unnatural.
|
|
Capitalization
|
Even when the right terminology was used, the capitalization was incorrect.
|
Language Studio™ Resolves Historical Complaints
Language Studio™ is designed to give LSPs total control of the translation
process, and it directly addresses all the above complaints.
|
Terminology and Vocabulary
|
|
Each domain, and even individual clients within a domain has its own specific or
preferred terminology and vocabulary. Language Studio™ allows you to control
terminology and vocabulary with:
- Glossaries – can be applied to an entire project or a single translation
job. Glossaries can be added to at any time.
- Non-Translatable Terms – can be specified so that essential terms remain
in the original language. This is especially important for product, company and
people names and locations.
- Translation Memories – can be used to automatically learn key terminology.
Leverage your existing translation assets to quickly build terminology without the
need for human effort.
- Post-Translation Normalization – can be applied to terms that may vary or
where a customer prefers to use a specific phrase. For example, 4 clients are all
in the same domain (Information Technology) and are using one custom translation
engine. Each client can normalize terms to its preferred form: Database / Relational
Database / Relational Database Management System / RDBMS.
|
|
Capitalization
|
|
Avoid post-editor frustration of having to repeat the same corrections multiple
times. Language Studio™ provides a variety of means to control capitalization:
- Translation Memories – provide an automated means to learn capitalization
from your existing translation assets.
- Source Sentence Matching – ensures that when a word is capitalized in the
source text that is being translated, the capitalization is mapped to the translated
phrase in the target translation.
- Monolingual Data – can be used as learning material for various industry
specific forms of capitalization.
- Post Translation Capitalization – can be applied for specific customers to
ensure that words are only capitalized when they are used in a specified context.
Example: "Catch the ICE International train from Brussels to Frankfurt International
Airport." vs. "There was ice on the road along the international border."
|
|
Writing Style
|
|
A key task in human translation projects is to define the style guide. Language
Studio™ also uses a style guide in the form of examples from existing high
quality text written in the style that is desired by the client. Writing style information
is automatically extracted from examples of writing in the target language. Examples
can come from a variety of sources:
- Translation Memories – provide an essential source of writing patterns through
the previous translations for a client.
- Monolingual Data – that the client may already have in the target language
is very good content to learn from. The best learning material is material that
was originally authored in the target language by the client and was therefore not
influenced by the translation process. Mother tongue source text is often readily
available.
- Similar Content – from other sources can be analyzed for writing style and
to learn how industry specific terms can be used within a sentence structure.
|
|
Ongoing Translation Quality Improvement
|
|
Whether you start without any learning material or with large volumes of learning
material (Translation Memories, Glossaries, etc.) Language Studio™ helps you
to rapidly evolve your custom translation engines to near-human quality.
The unique Language Studio™ human feedback loop where every edit that is made
helps to improve future translations ensures that the automated machine translation
output continues to improve progressively.
Language Studio™ PowerTrain technology analyses the differences after editing
and then adjusts its statistical data to account for the new knowledge gained. Through
this evolutionary process, error patterns are automatically identified and future
translations do not repeat the same error.
Over a series of learning iterations, Language Studio™ translation quality
will improve. With each improvement, less post editing effort is required, resulting
in lower costs and faster delivery times, without compromising quality.

|
|
|
|
Translation is a complex task. It is often hard to define and conceive of everything
that you want in your translated text in advance. However when you see the output,
you know very quickly what you do not want. Once a custom engine has been created,
Language Studio™ allows further refinements to be applied through a number
of powerful runtime features:
|
The modern face of automated machine translation.
|
|
Spelling Dictionary
Quality issues in source text are often a major cause of lower quality translations.
Common issues can be addressed by automatically modifying and correcting the source
material as part of the overall translation process.
This feature modifies the source text making changes that can then be processed
as normal by other steps within the translation process.
|
|
Runtime Glossary
Additional glossary terms can be added quickly to any translation or applied to
all translations by default.
This feature modifies the source text and makes changes that guide the engine to
make specific choices on vocabulary and terminology.
|
|
Non-Translatable Terms
Additional non-translatable terms can be added quickly to any translation or applied
to all translations by default.
This feature modifies the source text and makes changes that guide the engine on
what should be translated and what should remain in the original form.
|
|
Post Translation Adjustments
Normalization of terms and adjustments to preferred capitalization
This feature modifies the target text after it has been translated.
|
|
All features support case sensitive, case insensitive and regular express matches.

Language Studio™ supports industry standard data interchange formats such
as TMX and XLIFF. Embedded formatting information is retained and passed through
the translation engine. TMX and XLIFF formats can be submitted via API, Language
Studio™ Pro desktop tools, Language Studio™ Enterprise Web, Windows
Command Line and Language Studio™ Drop Folders. Modified standard formats
such as SDLXLIFF are also supported.
Documents can also be submitted through a variety of third-party translation management
systems that have already integrated the Language Studio™ API into their products.
Integration includes products from Kilgray, Across, Clay-Tablet, SDL, TransPerfect
and others. See our Technology Partners section
for more information.
A wide variety of other document formats is also supported, with new formats being
added on a regular basis. In addition, every translation generates a TMX file which
can be imported directly back into your translation management system.

The Asia Online team will work with you to help your business define the best business
model that maximizes the potential of automated machine translation.
Models and Benefits include:
|
Productivity Gains
Use Language Studio™ to increase productivity. A typical human can translate
between 2,000-3,000 words per day. With Language Studio™, productivity can
rapidly be increased by 200-300%. With highly technical content, it is possible
to increase productivity to even greater levels. Many human translators will struggle
with technical terms, but once defined and trained just once, a Language Studio™
delivers a technical term as quickly and any other term – saving a lot of time looking
up complex terminology in dictionaries.
Language Studio™ can be used in a similar manner to a translation memory,
with confidence scores serving in place of a match percentage normally seen with
translation memories. Many translation management systems have already integrated
Language Studio™ so that it is part of the overall process and seamlessly
integrated with traditional translation management processes and methodologies.
|
|
Lower Costs
Productivity gains not only translate into faster delivery, but lower the overall
cost of a project. With an increasing squeeze on margins from lower cost markets
(or lower quality competitors), lowering the cost of translation is essential for
LSPs to remain competitive. Automation of parts of the translation process is essential.
Humans are an essential element of the translation process, but with a human and
machine combination approach to delivering translations, quality translations can
be delivered with higher margins than ever before.
|
|
Advanced Translation Memory
Language Studio™ should be thought of as a translation memory on steroids.
Like a translation memory, checking and proof reading is still required, but unlike
a translation memory, Language Studio™ is able to provide translations of
materials that have not been seen in the past.
By viewing Language Studio™ as an advanced form of translation memories, it
is easy to understand how machine translation fits into the overall professional
translation process. Some LSPs will inform their customers that they are using translation
memories; others choose simply to use a translation memory as a tool in their tool-chest
that enables them to deliver high-quality translations faster and at a lower cost
than their competitors. As an advanced form of translation memory, Language Studio™
also matches these models.
|
|
Specialization
Many LSPs specialize in a field of knowledge such as Information Technology (IT),
Legal or Healthcare. Over a period of time, large volumes of translation memories
have been accumulated along with other industry knowledge such as glossaries and
terminology.
Like human translation, Language Studio™ delivers the highest quality translations
when customized for a specialized purpose. Once a specialized engine has been created,
it can be refined rapidly and adapted for a variety of customers. It is also possible
to build a specialized system in a domain of knowledge that acts as a foundation
for other customized engines. Taking this approach, different customers can have
their specific vocabulary, terminology and style applied.
|
|
Beyond The Reach of Human Translation
Many new opportunities reside in work outside the reach of traditional human translation
projects. With speeds reaching hundreds of millions of words per day, it is possible
to translate a wide variety of enterprise information, communications, support and
knowledge base information, user generated content, reports and more.
|
|
Business Case Justification
Many translation projects are not feasible due to cost or time constraints. As a
result, they fail to be approved and end before they are even started. With Language
Studio™ large translation projects can be delivered at a fraction of the original
cost and in a fraction of the time.
Projects that in the past were rejected are now feasible, and the business case
can more readily justified. In addition, new kinds of content that was not affordable
to translate in the past or was simply too large in volume for humans to translate
can now be translated quickly and cost effectively.
|
|
More Translation Work - Business Growth
Not only do projects that would have previously failed business case justification
get approved, because of those projects success, more business in generated by end
customers in foreign languages. These markets have ongoing requirements for new
translation work and through their success drives the desire for expansion into
additional markets that were originally out of reach.
